Oxygen Guidelines 

Medicare and Medicaid have strict guidelines regarding payment for oxygen.  The guidelines include the following requirements:

• Oxygen MUST be prescribed by a physician.

• A saturation test must be completed on room air at rest within 30 days prior to the initial set up date or two days prior to discharge from a hospital.

  • The saturation level must be less than 89%.

• A completed prescription and a Certificate of Medical Necessity must be completed prior to set up for Medicare and/or Medicaid to pay for the oxygen
